USB Cable Choice

Hi, I wondering why you guys chose the micro B USB 3.0 cables instead of regular type B ones. The reason why is that these I’m not very confident of the reliability of these connectors. They’re thin and in my experience, not very consistent when cycling the connections between trips, etc. Why not USB 3.0 Type B or Type C?

Hi Squiggles,

The main reasons we went with the micro-b is size (board space) and it is rated for more mating cycles. Type C wasn’t common when we released our first USB 3.0 product.

Could maybe just be bad luck but I had at least one micro B USB cable that was picky about how it was plugged in. It would blink green at times (assuming this meant power but no data connection) and other times it would make the Windows device manager go crazy reconnecting in pattern. I have a handful of SignalHound units and used the other units cables just fine.

I don’t like the idea of a thin, flat cable to where I’m worried about bending/snapping it vertically while carrying/using it out in the field. I haven’t had good experiences with other USB 3 micro B devices as well, such as external hard drives.
